Karl Prantl and Hans Bischoffshausen
The art lies in the silence
EXHIBITION – April 15th – May 18th, 2024
With the opening exhibition of zetter ▪ projects , “KARL PRANTL and HANS BISCHOFFSHAUSEN – Art lies in the silence”, gallery owner Katharina Zetter-Karner brings two outstanding protagonists of the Austrian post-war avant-garde into the focus of public attention: KARL PRANTL and HANS BISCHOFFSHAUSEN.
Karl Prantl, the declared stone sculptor, and Hans Bischoffshausen, the painter who explores the boundaries of the genre, appear in this exhibition by the gallery zetter ▪ projects together with the gallery artziwna realized exhibition project into a fruitful artistic dialogue with each other. What ostensibly unites the visual works of these two non-conformist artistic personalities is the (apparently) pure aesthetics of their oeuvre. The current exhibition succeeds in making artistic parameters such as material reference, reduction, structure and monochrome, which were essential for Karl Prantl and Hans Bischoffshausen, visible. Biographically, it is the year 1959 that represents a drastic turning point in both lives: In 1959, Hans Bischoffshausen went to Paris, the then world capital of art, while Karl Prantl initiated the first of several groundbreaking international sculpture symposiums in the local quarry in St. Margarethen, Burgenland. For Karl Prantl and Hans Bischoffshausen, who both took part in the first sculpture symposium in Krastal near Villach in 1967, life and work formed an inseparable, indispensable unity.
